Will Disappointing WrestleMania Spark Thrilling Rivalry?
Overall, WrestleMania 34 was a good show with plenty of entertaining matchups. But, unfortunately, the main event by which WrestleManias tend to be judged was disappointing. The match itself featured big moves and even blood, but soft chants for Roman Reigns coming in and a short burst of cheers for Brock Lesnar upon his victory made it seem like the
crowd wasn’t as enticed by the spectacle as in previous years. Some even labelled it as a top- five worst for WrestleMania main events.
But, through the quagmire of an underwhelming main event could spawn something incredibly exciting. Everything appears to have aligned for Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar to create a brutal rivalry.
It officially begins at WrestleMania 34
Many thought that the battle for the Universal Championship would see a begrudged passing of the torch from Brock Lesnar to Roman Reigns. Reigns has been in the ascendancy for some time, and many expect him to become the championship-totting heel. But, in a match that predominantly featured spears and F-5s, a flurry of elbows from Lesnar ended Reigns’ hopes of claiming the Universal Championship.
The two had met in a Fatal 4-Way back in August 2017, but this match for the ultimate prize is what will really kick this heavyweight rivalry into high gear. Lesnar retaining the title was a shock to some, but will surely spark a beaten Reigns to go all-out in a future bout. This could result in some of the most impressive wrestling that anyone has seen from the 6’3’’ Samoan.
More is almost certainly on the way as Brock Lesnar has re-signed with the WWE. While he is still under contract for more fights in the UFC, it means that he would need to re-enter the USADA testing pool. Given that his last UFC bout in July 206 was ruled a no-contest due to Lesnar testing positive for clomiphene, there’s a chance that he may commit to more WWE work over the UFC for now.
An epic rivalry on the horizon?
Roman Reigns, expected to take the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34, is now a beaten man. He was obliterated in the end by Lesnar, so now he has to put in some incredible performances to amp himself up and contend with the ‘Beast Incarnate’.
This kind of spectacle has precedence in another heavyweight rivalry for the ages. Over in boxing, the heavily favoured David Haye came up against Tony Bellew only to put in a very weak boxing performance, get injured, and lose in the first fight. Despite Bellew leaving victorious, he’s now +200 in Bellew vs Haye II. Much like in this heavyweight rivalry, the current victor, Brock Lesnar, could come into a rematch as the underdog in the odds, as people expect the storyline to conclude with Reigns on top. But, that may not come as soon as many expect.
What would pique interest, give the fans what they want, and eventually raise the prestige of Roman Reigns would be if Reigns lost at the hands of Lesnar once again. If Reigns comes in all guns blazing and perhaps loses despite his dominance in the match, a part three in which Reigns rises up and finally wins could be quite spectacular.
Given the way that Roman Reigns’ WWE career is going, there’s no doubt that his bloody end to WrestleMania 34 will be his springboard to better things. But first, he must conquer Brock Lesnar. Drawing out this storyline and building a mighty heavyweight rivalry could turn a tame WrestleMania main event into a much-loved rivalry.
